Presenting your
homeland to the host-family is a vital part of the intercultural exchange. I decided
to concentrate on Polish cuisine and I thought the task was going to be easy. The choice of
the dish was pretty obvious to me: “kotlety schabowe” that is pork chops, one
of the most popular dishes in Poland and a simple one, too. It's a meat dish:
breaded slices of fried pork seasoned with salt, garlic and pepper. The cutlets are usually served with cabbage
(or some other vegetables) and boiled potatoes. I thought it would be as simple
as it always was, but this time...
I got a
little bit frustrated when I discovered that in Belgium nobody knows what a
mallet is... How I was supposed to make “kotlety schabowe”
without a mallet? At first I thought it would be impossible but very quickly me
and my host-parents managed to prove that human imagination has no limits...
Our first
idea was to take two cutting boards, put the chops on one of them and use the
other one for beating meat. It worked,
but after three minutes or so our hands hurt so much that we decided to give it
up. Then my host-dad had another idea which turned out to be absolutely the
best. He put the cutting boards with meat between them on the floor and...
started to jump on them (seriously, I'm not kidding!). It looked ridiculous but
it really worked and this method turned out to be truly successful. I felt much
better when quite unexpectedly, after a few more jumps the meat slipped out and... My host-mum began screaming but luckily, dad
didn't fall down. The whole situation was so unpredictable and funny that we
couldn’t stop laughing.
And, Ladies
and Gentlemen, this is how a new extreme sport called "cutlet-surfing"
was initiated. Please, keep this historical moment in your memory. Who knows,
maybe one day it will become your national
sport?
The meat was almost ready for frying but it occurred to us that we might
try something else, a rolling pin. It was more effective than beating meat with
a cutting board and definitely safer than jumping on them, but this technique also
had some drawbacks. When everything seemed to go smoothly to the end, I
suddenly broke the rolling pin. Yes, I broke it and I felt terrible! The task
seemed to be so easy, I was to prepare a popular Polish dish and quite
unexpectedly so many weird and dangerous things happened ! Even now, the very
memory of the whole situation sends shivers down my spine!
Concluding,
the dish wasn't perfect but it wasn't bad either, just a little bit different from
the original Polish version. Probably because we resorted to so unconventional
techniques and used slightly different ingredients. In Belgium some things like,
for example, bread crumbs taste and look different than in Poland. As I said, the
dish wasn't bad, but I do hope the next Polish dish I’m going to prepare will not
pose any risk to our health and well-being, hahaha :)
That was my
first adventure in the Kitchenland. What do you think of it? Did you enjoy my
story?
Nowy sport ekstremalny
Działał on lepiej (i był bardziej bezpieczny) niż deski do krojenia.
Koniecznie napiszcie w komentarzu!
